Honey Garlic Chicken Served over Garlic Shredded Cabbage

Recipe photo

This flavorful garlic chicken and cabbage whips together within half an hour and is full and satisfying. Even my toddler is a huge fan of this dish. It quickly became a family favorite when I stumbled upon it one day trying to use up an aging head of cabbage. This meal is easy and quick cooking. So, if you are looking for something delicious and simple to have in your back pocket for those busy days, save this!

The Process

Diced Chicken, onion, and garlic cloves cooking.

You start by taking your diced chicken, onion, and garlic cloves and cooking them in a pan until cooked through and tender. This should take about 15 minutes. You can tell if the chicken is done when it is fork tender. The chicken pieces will easily rip apart using a fork or spatula. While the chicken is cooking, you can turn your attention to the cabbage. Just remember to occasionally stir the chicken to help it to cook evenly.

Slice half of a cabbage head into shreds. Add your cabbage to a separate pan with a tablespoon of olive oil and some salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Cook the cabbage on medium heat stirring occasionally and being careful to prevent burning. This should only take about 10 minutes. Once the cabbage is cooked, cover the pan and let it sit while you finish the chicken.

Adding the honey to the chicken.

Once the chicken is cooked you can then add the honey to it, and stir well so that it is evenly combined. You do not want to add it while you are still cooking the chicken because it will burn the honey and give it a hard sticky texture. Once your honey is added, your chicken and onions will have a carmelized appearance.

That is all there is to it! This meal comes together super fast, and all that is left is to serve your delicious home-cooked meal to your family. The garlic flavor blends the two foods together as if they belong. Just serve your chicken over the top of the cabbage and enjoy! You can pair this alongside a slice of homemade bread or some dinner rolls if you are like me and enjoy having a filling starch or carb as a side at dinner time.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil

  • 2 Chicken breasts

  • 1 Medium onion

  • 3 cloves garlic

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

  • 2 tablespoons honey

  • 1/2 of a large cabbage (about 4 cups shredded and uncooked)

  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder

Directions

  • Dice up the chicken breasts, the onion, and the garlic cloves.
  • Pour 2 tbsp of the olive oil into a frying pan, and add your chicken, onion, garlic cloves, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/4 tsp pepper, and sautee on medium heat until the chicken is cooked through. This should take about 15 minutes.
  • On a separate cutting board while the chicken is cooking, slice your cabbage into thin strips. Half of a large cabbage should yeild you about 3-4 cups of shredded uncooked cabbage.
  • Cook the cabbage in a separate frying pan in a tablespoon of olive oil for about 10 minutes on medium heat. Season the cabbage with the remaining salt, pepper, and garlic powder listed while cooking, stirring well so that it is evenly dispersed.
  • Return to the cooked chicken, and pour the 2 tbsp of honey over the chicken stirring well.
  • Once your cabbage and chicken are both cooked through, serve the chicken over the top of the shredded cabbage.
